Where do I put the phone?

On the nightstand, face down, on the charger. It does not need to be on the mattress — the app listens to the room. If you do put it on the bed, switch the card on the night screen to "On the bed" so the movement is read from the accelerometer instead.

Does it record the whole night?

No. It keeps only short clips of the loud moments, a few seconds each. Everything stays on your iPhone, is named on your device, and deletes itself after 14 days. See the Privacy Policy for the details.

The alarm did not go off

Keep the app open in the background — do not swipe it away from the app switcher before sleeping. If the app is force-quit, only the backup notification can fire, and it will be quieter. Also check that the alarm is switched on on the night screen and that Do Not Disturb allows the app's notifications.

Why does my report say the phone left the bed?

In "On the bed" mode the app watches for a long stretch in which nothing moved at all — usually a phone that slipped off the mattress. Those minutes are left out of the numbers, and the report says when it happened. If the phone is meant to be on the table, switch the card to "On the table" and the warning stops.

Why is there no sleep phases chart?

Because a phone cannot measure them. In REM sleep the muscles switch off and you lie as still as in the deepest sleep there is — from the outside the two look identical. Apps that draw those phases from a phone are drawing a guess. We show what was actually measured: how much you moved and what was heard.

How accurate is it?

We checked it against 31 nights recorded in a sleep lab with polysomnography. It finds almost all the sleep and about a third to a half of the time spent awake in bed — lying still counts as sleep whether or not you were asleep. That is a limit of every phone and wristband, and we would rather print the number than hide it.

Is this a medical app?

No. It describes your night. It does not diagnose anything, including sleep apnoea. If something about your sleep worries you, talk to a doctor.
